TH Plastics have presented James Goddard with a certificate to mark 10 years with the company.
James, known as Jimmy to his friends, joined the plastics ancillary solutions provider in Glossop as an apprentice electrician in 2008.
Jimmy said: “It was a very small company at first and I had no background in engineering or a trade. We were operating out of Lee, the Managing Director’s barn before forming TH Plastics in October 2008. At the start there were just a handful of us and now there’s 20. Between us we have over 100 years industry experience in the plastics industry.”
As the company grew, TH Plastics hired more skilled engineers and two years later they moved into the units where they are now on Graphite Way.
In the early days, they were able to win contracts on price because they had few overheads. A downturn in the market helped them to gain more customers, as businesses looked at how to reduce their outgoings.
TH Plastics now offers a turnkey approach to supply and installation of machinery, ancillary fabrications and servicing within the plastics industry.
Jimmy said: “We learnt early on that the focus had to be on customer service and we have maintained a good reputation for this. We aim for as little down time as possible for the customer’s machinery so their production isn’t disrupted.”
After joining the team, Jimmy signed up to a HND course in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and received several awards including Student of the Year, Engineering Industries Association Award, and Project of the Year for his BTEC diploma. Following this, Jimmy became senior engineer and started running projects on site and later moved into a technical sales role, preparing specifications for the sales team.
In 2013 TH Plastics formed a partnership with Moretto – an Italian manufacturer of ancillary solutions.
Jimmy said: “The Moretto partnership has helped because they are a well-established name in the plastics industry. Being their sole UK supplier gives us more ammunition when we are speaking to potential clients. Maintaining the relationship with Moretto is something I have been heavily involved with.”
Although Jimmy is now one of the most experienced members of the team, he is still developing his skills. He is currently half way through a three-year Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship with Sheffield Hallam, supported by TH Plastics
He said: “I have been doing more managerial work but I’m still getting stuck in and involved with the technical stuff when required.”
